Inspired by a deeply personal
experience, Anthony Sajeeth, an IT employee from Bengaluru, has launched an
initiative to create safe and supportive spaces for girls experiencing
menstruation in rural Kolar district. His initiative, called ‘The Pink Room,’
aims to provide comfort and privacy for schoolgirls during their menstrual
cycle.
The idea stemmed from an incident
in 2010, when Sajeeth’s daughter experienced her first menstruation while at
school. Unprepared and distressed, she had no private space to manage the
situation, leaving her embarrassed and uncomfortable.
In the past year, he has successfully
established three ‘Pink Rooms’ in government schools across Kolar. The first
was opened at the Government School in Madanahalli Cross, followed by another
in Kurugal village, and a third in Kyalanoor, where approximately 300 girls are
enrolled. These rooms are equipped with facilities like attached toilets, a
changing room, a pad vending machine, and an incinerator for safe disposal of
used pads. The rooms also feature cots and study tables to ensure a comfortable
environment.
Sajeeth, who funded the project
personally, is now working to expand the initiative with the help of local
government representatives, corporate sponsors, and CSR support. His goal is to
ensure that girls in rural areas have the necessary resources to manage
menstruation with dignity and ease. -Salar News
